Becoming a Christian

Are you wondering about what it means to become a Christian?

Hopefully the answers below will be a starting point for you but it is important that if you don’t already, that you start to attend a Bible-teaching church where you will hear the Gospel explained.

When your questions multiply (and they will) the next step is to start digging deeper.  At DEC we offer the opportunity to take part in a ‘Christianity Explored’ course which are friendly group sessions, usually held in a members or the Pastor’s home.

What does the term ‘Christian’ mean?

Acts 11:26 tells us that the term “Christian” was first used in the city of Antioch and was probably used in the beginning as an insult.  However, over the centuries believers have taken on the term as a way of identifying themselves as followers of Jesus.

Why should I become a Christian?

Mark 10:45 is where Jesus declared that He “…did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many”.  But why did we need to be ransomed and from what?

We cannot save ourselves or earn our salvation and it is untrue to say that God will accept us if we are good.  We are sinful by nature and can never be good enough to stand before a holy God.  But what we can’t do, the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us – for no other reason than His love for us.

Romans 3:23a “for all have sinned…” Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death…” but verse 23 goes on to tell us “…but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  How did Jesus pay that ransom?

1Corinthians 15:3a “…that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,” 2Corinthians 5:21 “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” Why was that enough?

Because Jesus was God in human form, His death had great value and was to serve one purpose.  John 1:1,14a “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us…”  1John 2:2a “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins…”

How can I become a Christian?

It may sound glib to say that it’s simple but it is.  All you have to do is receive Jesus as your Saviour, accepting His death as the sufficient sacrifice for your sins and trusting in Him.  It is not about rituals it is about a personal relationship.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

John 14:6 “Jesus answered, ‘I am the Way and the Truth and the Life.  No one comes to the Father except through me””

Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

Acts 16:30,31 “…”Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved…””

But that is just the start of your relationship!
