Learning To Type

“And this is how we know [daily, by experience] that we have come to know Him [to understand Him and be more deeply acquainted with Him]: if we habitually keep [focused on His precepts and obey] His commandments (teachings).” 1 John 2v3 AMP

While reading my Bible I often come across either a verse or passage that catches my attention because it impacts something of relevance that is appropriate for me.  So why, you may ask, did this verse remind me of learning to type.

To qualify as a touch/copy typist you must be able to type without looking at the keys of the typewriter.  It is only through constant practise that you learn where each key is, and once learnt your brain instinctively navigates your fingers to where each letter or symbol is.  But to do that correctly there has to be a constant, a starting place on the keyboard; so that is why the first thing you learn is to place your fingers on the 8 ‘home keys’ ASDF JKL;.

They are the base from where your fingers venture out – up a row, down a row, diagonally or to the side – to find the other keys.  Any typist will tell you that if you are one key off to the right you will produce nonsense.  It takes a lot of practise; but it is only through this process that typing without looking at the keyboard becomes automatic; something you do naturally.

When I first became a Christian I learnt about how I was saved by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, about the Holy Spirit who was given to me as a gift, the fundamentals that I guess I could call my ‘home keys’, the things I clung to.  Still even though I knew I was saved and going to heaven I was struggling in my daily life with my attitude, my anger, my fears and a lack of peace.  I realised that I was never going to find the peace or freedom God wants for me unless I moved on from and learned more than just my ‘home keys’!

Going back to the Bible to study and explore and taking time to meditate and absorb what I was reading, with the help of the Holy Spirit, I began to build on those basic truths.  In the same way as repetition enabled me to learn to touch type, constantly reading, absorbing and applying what I was shown enabled me to become more intimately acquainted with God and the life He wants me to have; progressively learning to rely, trust and lean on God.

Now I look at my Bible as my new keyboard and I intend to reach out for the freedom, hope and peace held in its pages lingering under my fingertips.
