Who is your Guide?

Psalm 23v1
“The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, guide, and protect me], I shall not lack.” (AMPC)

I have read Psalm 23 countless times.  I first learnt it as a child, reciting the King James Version at school.  Sometimes, familiar words slip by unnoticed, but then the Spirit draws our attention to a phrase, inviting us to pause and look deeper.  In those moments, I use a simple system to understand more deeply, trusting God to reveal new insights.

• I begin with prayer, asking God to open my heart
• I explore the meaning of words, seeking clarity
• I search for other scriptures that use the same word
• I let the Holy Spirit lead me, even if it means wandering down unexpected paths
• I jot down any thoughts for future study
• I finish by thanking God for His guidance

I’d like to share what I discovered when I looked at the word ‘guide.’  First I looked at the definitions:

1. Show somebody the way: – to lead somebody in the right direction.
2. Advise or influence somebody: – to advise or counsel somebody or influence the way somebody behaves or acts.
3. Help somebody learn something: – to teach somebody or oversee training in something.
4. Influence on decision: – a strong influence on the decisions and behaviour of another.

Searching the scriptures for where the word ‘guide’ is used brought me to Psalm 25 and three verses in particular caught my attention.  “To You, O Lord, I lift up my life.  Show me Your ways; teach me Your paths.  Guide me in Your truth and faithfulness, for You are the God of my salvation.  In You I wait all day long.” (v1,4-5).  It pictured for me a child holding up a broken toy and simply saying, “Fix it, Daddy.”  How often have I come to God like this—asking Him to fix what I think needs changing, while He gently shows me what truly needs to be transformed?  God’s wisdom and grace will always leads me to what matters most.

The second passage I looked at is from Psalm 48v14 “For this God is our God forever and ever; He will be our guide [even] until death” this is a reminder of what infinite patience our Lord has.  When I looked back at the first dictionary definition in the list above – “lead somebody in the right direction” – it added more to this passage for me, letting me feel that God doesn’t just tell me the end result He wants and then leaves me to get on with it, rather He walks the path with me because He understands what I will face both inwardly and outwardly.

Finally, Revelation 7v17 offers hope: “For the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their Shepherd; He will lead them to springs of living water.  And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”   God’s guidance is not just for today—it carries us all the way to eternity.  He holds us close, wipes away our tears, and promises we will never be alone.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your gentle guidance and endless patience.  Thank You for walking with us, for showing us the way, and for holding us close when we falter.  Help us to trust Your wisdom and follow Your lead, knowing Your love never fails.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
