“You’ll Never Walk Alone,” a song widely recognised by supporters of Liverpool and Celtic football clubs, was released in 1963 by Gerry & The Pacemakers.  However, its origins trace back to the musical “Carousel,” written by Rodgers & Hammerstein.

The simple and yet emotive words of this song are sung twice in the musical: initially to comfort a grieving, pregnant widow at her husband’s side, and subsequently during a class graduation as ‘Louise,’ the now adult child, faces feelings of isolation.  In both instances, the lyrics are delivered to both comfort and inspire resilience, with the latter scene featuring Louise’s late father encouraging her through song.

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark…

Walk on!  Walk on!  With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone.

“You’ll Never Walk Alone” Song by Gerry & The Pacemakers

Many individuals may be familiar with these words of encouragement; however, it is worth considering whether we have truly embraced them in our Christian lives.  One verse that often comes to mind initially is Psalm 23v4 “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

We are reminded in Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 that we will encounter many seasons throughout our lives, yet we have a steadfast promise—one that has been given to us repeatedly—on which we can rely.  Consider the verses below and see how many more you can find that encourage you.

Joshua 1v9 (NIV)
“Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Isaiah 41v10 (NIV)
“So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Deuteronomy 31v8 (NIV)
“The LORD Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Habakkuk 3v19 (AMPC)
The Lord God is my Strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army; He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and will make me to walk [not to stand still in terror, but to walk] and make [spiritual] progress upon my high places [of trouble, suffering, or responsibility]!
